The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton elevates business skills with simulation challenge
Final-year Bachelor of Commerce students at The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton sharpened their strategic thinking and leadership skills through a dynamic three-day business simulation challenge, bridging theory and real-world business practice.
In an exciting, beyond the classroom initiative, 32 final-year Bachelor of Commerce students at The IIE’s Varsity College Sandton campus recently participated in the annual business simulation challenge.
This immersive three-day event was designed to sharpen students’ strategic thinking, business acumen, and leadership skills by simulating the complex realities of running a business.
Divided into six teams of four to six members, the students faced a series of challenging scenarios that tested their ability to adapt to market shifts, manage financial hurdles, and make critical leadership decisions.
The simulation was expertly facilitated by Paul Fletcher, master facilitator and partner at Business Today South Africa, alongside Dr Daniella Teles Amaral, Katie Roebert, and Michelle Kirsten, from the campus academic team.

The teams were assessed on key performance indicators including return on net assets (RONA), market share, working capital management, annualised net sales, governance, and customer satisfaction index. This comprehensive evaluation offered students a realistic taste of business operations and the pressures they will encounter post-graduation.
A third-year Bachelor of Commerce student and member of Salvora Solutions, the winning team, Rene Naidoo, shared her experience, “The business simulation was such an eye-opening experience. My team and I really enjoyed it.
“I had the opportunity to put my theory into practice and to turn it into real critical thinking. I also learnt a lot about delegating tasks, working with my team, and letting everyone play to their strengths.”
