Bryanston Primary turns Heritage Day into a celebration of giving

In a moving show of unity and compassion, Bryanston Primary School marked Heritage Day on September 23 by celebrating not just culture and pride, but also the spirit of giving, donating food and clothing to Kids Haven.

In celebration of South African heritage and school pride, Bryanston Primary School learners and teachers came together on September 23 and donated canned food, clothing, and books to Kids Haven, a children’s home based in Benoni that supports vulnerable and homeless children.

Bryanston Primary School teacher Tiaan Rheeder shared the inspiration behind the event.

“We are here today to celebrate Heritage Day and to celebrate Bryanston pride and culture.

“The reason why we’re doing this is to support a children’s home called Kids Haven, for all the great work they do looking after less fortunate children.

We thought we could give back to the community a little bit and show them Bryanston pride and culture, and just help where we can to make a difference in other children’s lives.”

The donations, which included a large collection of non-perishable food items, gently used clothing, and books, were all contributed by the learners of Bryanston Primary School.

“The cans of food and clothing come from the learners at the school. Each learner donates food or clothing, things they no longer use, to help. It’s all about giving and supporting others.

“It’s amazing to see the parents just as involved as the kids. As an educator, it makes me very happy to see that everyone wants to make a difference,” said Rheeder.

This was the first time the school hosted such an event for Heritage Day, but hopes are high for it to become an annual tradition.

“Hopefully, next year we can plan it even bigger and grow each year. The dream is to eventually make an even bigger impact and support more parts of the community,” Rheeder added.

Kids Haven, which has been active for years in supporting children in need, expressed their deep appreciation for the support.

Connie Biyela, a fundraiser at Kids Haven, said, “Kids Haven is a children’s home in Benoni. We care for vulnerable kids, including those living on the streets. We provide accommodation, food, education, and everything children need.

Bryanston Primary School has been collecting cans of food, non-perishables, and clothing, and we are grateful for their support.”

She went on to explain that the donations would support not only children living at Kids Haven, but also those in the surrounding communities.

“We have three pillars of care: Pre-care, in-care, and after-care.

The donations will go a long way in helping us support families in the community, children living at Kids Haven, and those we support after they leave the home,” Biyela added.
