Wena Wednesday treats Sandton workers to free coffee and scones

On the morning of October 1, Sandton’s Grayston Drive lit up with smiles as the Wena Wednesday initiative welcomed workers with free coffee and freshly baked scones.

The working class received a heartfelt tribute this past Wednesday as Wena Wednesday, the community-driven initiative by Go Fund Yourself in collaboration with Coffee on Grayston, returned with warmth quite literally.

Set up on the bustling Grayston Drive in Sandton on October 1, the team offered free coffee and freshly baked scones to commuters and workers making their way into the city’s economic engine room.

From 6:00 to 6:30, volunteers handed out refreshments with smiles and conversation, turning the usual midweek rush into a moment of calm and connection.

The initiative, whose name, Wena Wednesday, is aimed squarely at the everyday people who keep the economy running, drivers, office staff, cleaners, security guards, and everyone in between.

Praneshan Naidoo, a representative from Go Fund Yourself, emphasised the purpose behind the weekly gesture.

“We started Wena Wednesday because we believe the working-class people are the real backbone of this economy. Sandton is where so much happens, but it’s powered by individuals who often go unseen.

This is our way of saying, ‘We see you. We appreciate you.’ A cup of coffee and a scone might seem small, but the connection it creates is powerful.”

Since its inception, Wena Wednesday has become a consistent feature in the lives of many early risers in the area, with word spreading fast among Sandton’s morning commuters.

The pop-up table, often accompanied by laughter and friendly exchanges, now feels like a familiar stop, a literal warm-up to the workday.

“It’s more than just coffee or scones. It’s about taking 30 minutes out of the week to bring people together, to show that kindness and community still exist in busy city life. This is for the people, wena.”

“As Sandton gears up for the final quarter of the year, Wena Wednesday continues to serve not just refreshments, but a reminder that every individual matters. We invite all who pass by Grayston Drive to stop, sip, and share in a moment of gratitude, one cup at a time,” Naidoo concluded.
