Brescia House new deputy head girl aims to create legacy of generosity of spirit and support

Inspired by the African philosophy: ‘I am because we are’, Kristen Cikes hopes to foster unity and inclusion at the school, while celebrating every learner's value in the Brescia House community.

With a deep-rooted love for her school, a passion for servant leadership, and a strong belief in the power of community, 16-year-old Kristen Cikes is ready to take on her new role as deputy head girl of Brescia House School.

Kristen’s leadership style is driven by empathy, unity, and a joyful spirit that reflects the very essence of the school’s motto: Serviam, I will serve.

Kristen’s journey at Brescia began all the way back in Grade R. Over the years, the school has become more than just a place of learning; it has become her home, and its people her extended family. “This is where I discovered who I am. My passions, my challenges, and the dreams I hope to fulfil in the future.”

Her commitment to school life is evident in her wide involvement, particularly in sport, where she shines, both as a team player and a leader.

Kristen believes that community means more than just being part of a group; it means actively working together to make that belonging matter. “I’m happiest when I’m surrounded by my friends and teammates, working together to achieve the best results for my school.”

A servant leader at heart

Kristen describes her leadership journey as one that has grown over time, shaped by her experiences, both in and out of school. “I’ve had the privilege of leading many teams, and I’ve come to realise that my greatest joy in life is to work with people, and help them reach their individual goals.”

Her philosophy is rooted in servant leadership. “It’s not about status; it’s about uplifting others and leading by example.” This mindset is something she lives by every day, choosing to listen, support, and empower those around her.

A moment of honour and excitement

The moment Kristen was selected deputy head girl was, in her own words: “Surreal. It felt like I was living in a dream. It’s such an incredible honour to serve as a leader at the school I love.”
What makes the experience even more special is sharing it with close friends. “Thea, appointed as head girl, and Adwoa, appointed as deputy head girl, are two of my greatest friends, and that makes it all so much more exciting.”

Still, Kristen approaches the role with humility. “I just hope to do a good job and make Brescia proud.”

Building respect and fostering inclusion

As deputy head girl, Kristen sees her primary responsibility as being a source of positive energy and inclusion. “Brescia has allowed me to be the fun-loving and playful person I am, and I want to encourage my fellow pupils to let their own unique personalities shine every day.”

She aims to leave behind a legacy of respect for each other, for the school’s rich traditions, and for the broader world, drawing inspiration from the philosophy of ubuntu. “True leadership is about service, giving back, listening, and being someone others can rely on. My goal is not to stand above, but to stand with.”

Setting goals and driving change

Looking ahead, Kristen has clear goals for her year in office. The first, is to ensure that every senior student sees themselves as a leader, regardless of whether or not they hold a formal title. “We are all valuable chess pieces and need to move together as one.”

She also hopes to introduce initiatives that promote kindness, connection, and student wellbeing, from peer support and mentorship programmes, to talks on physical and mental health.

To bring about meaningful change, Kristen believes in collaboration, open dialogue, and always being approachable. “Great things happen when everyone feels they have an important part to play.”

Leaving a legacy of joy and unity

When her term comes to an end, Kristen hopes to be remembered, not only as a leader, but as a friend, a supporter, and someone who brought people together. “I want to leave a legacy of generosity of spirit and support.”

She dreams of a school community where everyone feels valued, celebrated, and, just as importantly, where they can have good, wholesome fun. Quoting Winnie the Pooh: “We didn’t realise we were making memories. We just knew we were having fun.”
