Officers conducted continuous roadblocks and maintained high visibility throughout the week, leading to the removal of dozens of intoxicated drivers from the city’s roads.
JMPD acting chief of police, acting Commissioner Eldred Fortein, condemned the high number of arrests, calling it completely unacceptable.
“These individuals made a selfish choice to endanger every other road user in Johannesburg. The JMPD is committed to reclaiming our roads. If you operate a vehicle while impaired or negligently, our officers will find you. We will not relent in enforcing traffic regulations and municipal by-laws.”

The department reiterated its zero-tolerance approach to drunk driving and other forms of lawlessness that threaten public safety.
Residents and visitors are urged to plan ahead when consuming alcohol, by arranging alternative transport, adhering to speed limits, and ensuring their vehicles and licenses are up to date and compliant.
The JMPD said its weekly enforcement operations will continue across the city as part of a broader campaign to curb reckless driving and reduce road fatalities.
