Gauteng braces for major road closures as G20 Summit arrives
Heavy delays expected this week as Gauteng locks down key routes for the G20 Summit.
Gauteng residents can expect heavy traffic disruptions this week as South Africa hosts the G20 Summit from November 18 to 23.
Authorities say several highways and key city routes will face intermittent or full closures to accommodate security convoys moving between Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation, alongside JMPD, TMPD, EMPD and SAPS, is urging motorists to plan ahead and allow extra travel time. Delays of up to an hour are possible on affected routes.

Hotspots in Johannesburg:
Drivers in Sandton, Rosebank, Melrose Arch, Fourways and the inner city should prepare for congestion. Roads such as Rivonia Road, Grayston Drive, Maude Street, Oxford Road, Jan Smuts Avenue, Glenhove Road and parts of the M1 will face stop-and-go closures when motorcades move through.
In the south, routes around Nasrec, including Rand Show Road, Booysens Reserve Road and sections of the Golden Highway, will see full closures on 22 and 23 November.
Highways Under Pressure:
Major highways including the N1, N3, N12, R21 and R24 will also be affected. Officials warn that rolling closures will be activated without much notice as convoys pass.
Ekurhuleni and Tshwane Also Affected
The G20 Social Summit at the Birchwood Hotel near OR Tambo means parts of Boksburg will be congested, especially around North Rand, Trichardt and Northern roads.
In Tshwane, motorists are advised to avoid the R21 and instead use the M57 where possible.

Key Full Closures
1. Grayston Drive: November 22, 04:00–10:00
2. Golden Highway (Rand Show Rd to Soweto Hwy): From November 17
3. Nasrec Road and Rand Show Road: November 22–23
4. Booysens Reserve Road: November 22–23
When convoys move, roads will be locked down entirely for short periods. Officials estimate delays between 30 minutes and an hour depending on traffic flow.
Suggested Alternatives
1. Use Cedar Road, Main Road or Witkoppen Road around Fourways
2. Use Corlett Drive, 11th Avenue or Sandton Drive instead of Jan Smuts, Oxford or Rivonia
3. Use Chris Hani Road, Main Reef Road, Soweto Highway or N17 around Nasrec and Ormonde
4. Use M57 instead of R21 between Tshwane and Ekurhuleni
5. Use Germiston or Bedfordview back routes instead of R24/N12
Authorities say signage, officers and real-time alerts will guide motorists through the week. Emergency and essential services will still have access at all times.
