Local learner to shine in Shrek the Musical Jr

For Grade 7 learner Kieran Moodley, performing in Shrek the Musical Jr is both exciting and challenging as he balances schoolwork with rehearsals.

A young performer from Crawford International Sandton is making his mark on stage as part of the cast of Shrek the Musical Jr at the Joburg Theatre.

Twelve-year-old Grade 7 learner Kieran Moodley plays the role of Pinocchio, as well as appearing as a Duloc civilian and a fox during one of the musical numbers. Kieran said being cast in the production was an emotional moment for him. “I was so excited. Sometimes you just feel like you want to cry when you get the role. You can’t wait for rehearsals to start because that’s when all the nice memories are made.” Although he only started performing about two years ago, the show marks his fourth production on stage.

He admits that stepping onto the stage can be nerve-wracking. “It’s the biggest kid role, so it’s of course very scary before you go on stage, but it’s a really nice experience.”

Kieran added that one of his favourite parts of the production had been the dress rehearsals, when costumes, sets, and choreography come together. “Just seeing everything together makes it so fun. You have so much fun on stage.”

He said balancing schoolwork with theatre rehearsals had been the biggest challenge. Rehearsals often run late into the evening, leaving little time for homework. “You only get home around six, so you have to catch up on a lot of schoolwork.” Despite the long days, Kieran said the experience had taught him discipline and hard work. For young people who dream of performing on stage, he encourages them to start now. “Chase your dreams. It doesn’t have to be one day; it can be now.”
