Rock and rubble bring cautious optimism for damaged Canning Road

Motorists using Canning Road in Ward 81 have recently noticed efforts to stabilise a partially collapsed section of road over the Jukskei River.

Residents and motorists travelling along Canning Road in Ward 81 have noticed a development at the site of the partially collapsed roadway over the Jukskei River.

Large rocks and rubble have been placed into the collapsed section near the bridge, suggesting that some form of stabilisation or interim repair work may be underway.

The road edge collapse was first publicly acknowledged by Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) in a traffic advisory issued in December 2025. At the time, the agency warned motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution after structural damage compromised part of the roadway. For months, the damaged section remained largely unchanged, with only temporary yellow barriers and caution tape separating passing vehicles from the collapsed edge. Residents raised concerns over the lack of visible repair work and limited communication regarding plans to permanently rehabilitate the site.

Recent activity at the scene has now sparked cautious optimism among road users, with many saying the addition of rocks appears to be the first visible sign of intervention since the initial collapse. However, some residents remain concerned that the measures may only serve as a temporary fix, rather than a long-term structural solution.

The affected route remains an important connector for motorists travelling between surrounding residential areas, schools, and businesses, with vehicles still required to navigate carefully around the narrowed roadway.
