Kovini Moodley, a chartered accountant and social justice advocate based in Sandton, said the gap between workplace policies and actual practice remained one of the biggest challenges facing workers today. She added that some organisations failed to follow their own procedures, leaving employees without protection when problems arise. “When policies are not implemented properly, employees lose trust in the system.” She noted that one of the most common tactics in toxic workplaces was the use of disciplinary hearings to intimidate or remove employees.
“In some cases, an employee may suddenly receive a disciplinary notice months after raising a concern. The process is then used as a tool of pressure rather than a fair investigation.” Moodley described psychological safety as an essential part of a healthy workplace, adding that employees must feel comfortable raising concerns without fear of retaliation. She encouraged workers to act quickly if they believed they were being unfairly targeted. “Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, seek professional advice and document everything.” Moodley also emphasised that employers have a legal responsibility to respond to complaints and create safe working environments.

“Workplaces must protect employees emotionally and mentally, not only physically.” With Workers’ Day approaching, she called on organisations to strengthen accountability and ensure that complaints are handled fairly and transparently. “Respect and dignity should be the foundation of every workplace.”
