Mock interview initiative equips Alexandra graduates for the world of work

A youth mentorship initiative hosted by the French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry is helping Alexandra graduates build confidence and connect with potential employers.

Graduates from Alexandra township took part in a mock interview session hosted by the French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FSACCI) in Sandton on May 12 as part of an employability programme designed to prepare young people for the workplace.

The initiative, run under the Sizanani mentorship programme and funded through the RATP Dev Foundation, with support from Bombela Operating Company, gave graduates practical exposure to professional interview settings, while helping them develop workplace readiness skills.

Founder of Sizanani Valerie Hirsch said the programme supports young graduates who often face barriers beyond obtaining qualifications.

“These young people may have the same qualifications as anyone else, but many lack professional networks, confidence, and exposure to workplace expectations. Through this programme, we help bridge that gap.”

She explained that students received training in CV writing, Microsoft tools, artificial intelligence applications, workplace conduct, and interview preparation before participating in practical mock interviews with human relations professionals.

“Today, each graduate completes two interviews and receives one-on-one feedback afterward. It gives them real-world practice and helps them improve.”

Since the programme launched in October 2024, about 60 graduates have completed training, with most securing employment, internships, or further study opportunities.

Graduate Buyisiwe Dzova said the programme helped her develop confidence and professional awareness.

“It taught us about work readiness and how to conduct ourselves professionally.

The interview training helped me build confidence and better understand how to present myself in the workplace.”
