Race to attract thousands

JOBURG - Thousands of runners are expected to participate in this year's Bonitas City2City Marathon, organised by Trophy Sports Management.

The sporting event is set to take place on 29 September.

Organisers said the race will serve the purpose to motivate the public to lose weight.

“As our lifestyle has become increasingly urban, westernised and sedentary, 61% of South Africans are today classed as overweight and obese and 49% never do any exercise whatsoever, bringing with this an abundance of health risks and life-threatening chronic diseases,” said Trophy Sports Management in a statement.

Participants are requested to enter before 24 August to take advantage of the early bird prizes. All early bird entries received by 24 August will receive a commemorative t-shirt and goody bag with the compliments of Bonitas Medical, to be collected at registration.

Seasoned athletes can participate in the 50km race that will take place between Pretoria and Johannesburg starting at 6:30am from the Gautrain Station, West Street, Centurion.

Only licensed athletes are permitted to participate in the 50km Ultra Marathon. The cut-off time for the 50km event is seven hours.

Both the 21.1km and 10km races head off at 7am from James & Ethel Gray Park in Melrose. The cut-off time is three hours for the 21.1km and two hours for the 10km.

Everyone who crosses the finish line within the cut-off times of the respective races will receive a medal, and there are cash prizes of R300 000 for respective positions and categories in each race.
