Bringing the championship back to Sandton grounds

A great win for the IIE's Varsity College Sandton, and a great start to the college's upcoming University of Sports South Africa season.

The Gauteng Intercampus Sports Day was hosted at IIE MSA Ruimsig, where the IIE’s Varsity College Sandton and IIE MSA, among other campuses, competed in netball, 5-aside football, touch rugby, e-sports, running men and women, volleyball, basketball, tables tennis men’s singles and doubles, 11-aside men’s football, 5-aside men’s football, and cheerleading.

Every student had the chance to showcase their skills in their different sports.

Anto Kagisho, the school’s public relations and events coordinator, said, “It was a lovely and successful day where students came with much-needed energy for the day, and I am quite sure everyone had a great day.”

When asked what being crowned the 2023 Gauteng Intercampus Sports Day Champions means for the campus, Mninawa Ndaku, the sports coordinator at the IIE’s Varsity College Sandton, narrowed down the journey for us.

“We are building a culture of belonging and healthy competition for all our students. Every student should feel like they are a part of a sporting community that allows them to thrive and be the best they can be. This win is a step in the right direction. For me, it comes down to having a plan to perform at all sporting codes at Intercampus.”

He added that the main goal this year is to ensure that each student understands the goal and that when they get to the competition, they are of one mindset, with the same competitive spirit of great sportsmanship, and that they represent their campus with pride.

Netball captain and third-year Bachelor of Laws student at Varsity College, Sandton Taniamandi Hlabane, said, “I am extremely proud of our netball ladies who worked hard to ensure they came to practise and invested time in preparing to win. Next step: USSA, and we are amped.”
