9-year-old Crawford International Sandton student fights her way to a gold medal at the Gauteng Karate Federation provincial championships
With skill and resilience, Livia Franzsen clinched the gold medal in the development category at the Gauteng Karate Federation provincial championships, forging a bright future in martial arts.
Livia Franzsen, from Crawford International Sandton, showcased extraordinary poise and skill at the Gauteng Karate Federation (GKF) provincial championships, walking away with the gold medal in the development category of the 9-year-old kumite rounds.
Her journey in karate, rooted in early inspiration from her older brother, has blossomed into a confident pursuit of martial arts excellence.
Livia began her karate journey at the tender age of three, encouraged by her older brother, who also had his own impressive day at the championships, securing a bronze medal in the elite category.

The family’s shared passion for karate has provided a unique support system, with practice sessions that often entail friendly sibling sparring, fully protected, of course, in a controlled environment to hone their skills.
In the lead-up to the championships, Livia dedicated herself to a rigorous training regimen, initially training with Japan Karate Association sensei Mark Wainman, and later with sensei Trishen Naidoo at Crawford International.
“I love karate because it helps me become stronger and more confident. Winning a gold medal feels amazing. I worked really hard, and it’s great to see my efforts paying off. I just can’t wait to keep training and maybe even get my black belt one day!” Livia said.

Livia expressed gratitude to her family for always showing up for her. “My family plays an integral role in my karate journey. They ensure that I have an opportunity to train and compete, and they also help with anxieties I might feel before competitions,” Livia said.
Looking ahead, Livia is motivated to further her karate journey, and aspires to compete in the elite category, aiming for her Protea Colours in future championships. “I would love to encourage other young girls to join karate. It’s a great way to stay active, make friends, and learn how to defend yourself,” Livia concluded.
