Off to the Olympics
SANDTON - A former Crawford College pupil is set to make waves in Brazil.
Crawford College Sandton expressed pride in one of their former pupils, Michael Meyer, who has qualified to compete in this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Meyer, who matriculated in 2010, is a talented and dedicated swimmer who has been selected to represent South Africa. He said he was extremely happy about the incredible opportunity that he was given and thanked his family and coaches for being a great support base.
He qualified for the Olympic Games at the Kings Park Aquatic Centre in Durban and will compete in the 400m individual medley. He said it felt as if all of his hard work had paid off, but more hard work is still to come. Having achieved a time of 4:15:71, beating the qualifying time by one second, he said he would be training more intensively to shave seconds off his current time.
“I leave for Mauritius soon, then at the end of May the team leaves for Europe where we will travel and race until June,” he said. “Then we move onto another camp in America for three weeks to help us get used to the climate in Brazil.”
Currently a finance student on a swimming scholarship at the University of Arizona, Meyer received an Olympic waiver so he could finish his degree next year.
His mother, Juliet, said he and his support base have worked so hard for this moment, and she and their families were extremely proud of Meyer and his achievements.
Spokesperson for Crawford College, Christelle Wolmarans, said the school was thrilled for him and commended the dedication he had exhibited.
