Two men caught stealing copper cable near Vaalpark

Police caught two suspects red-handed after staking out a copper cable site along the R59.

SASOLBURG — Two men from Lesotho have been arrested after police caught them digging up copper cable late at night near the R59.

The two suspects, both aged 41, were detained during a joint operation on October 1, involving the Sasolburg Highway Patrol, local police units, and private security companies.

According to Fezile Dabi District Police spokesperson Sergeant Josephine Rani, Operation Shanela II forces received information at about 20:45 that two men were allegedly digging up copper cable along the R59 near Vaalpark.

Although the suspects had initially left the area before officers arrived, police set up a stakeout and waited.

At around 23:00, the men returned to the scene to continue digging, allowing officers to move in and arrest them immediately.

The suspects failed to show identification documents when questioned and had equipment confiscated at the scene.

They face charges of tampering with and damaging essential infrastructure, possession of housebreaking tools, and breaching immigration laws.

They are due to appear in the Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court.
