Racism in court-probe demanded
The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) united against alleged racism experienced at the Sebokeng Magistrates Court and the abuse of community members by police.
SEBOKENG. – The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) united against alleged racism experienced at the Sebokeng Magistrates Court and the abuse of community members by police.
They took to the streets marching to the Sebokeng Magistrates Court on Wednesday last week.
The youth said they had had enough of the negative attitude received from the state prosecutors with respect to black people.
They called for the stopping of youth-killings, gangsterism, drugs and substance abuse. The emphasis was particularly on the racial attacks from officials.
In their statement, Teboho ‘Tebza’ Mokoena, coordinator of the march, requested a meeting with the department of justice, police, National Prosecution Authority (NPA) and the Community Policing Forum (CPF) within seven days after receipt of the memorandum.
The memorandum was presented by Mokoena on behalf of the youth and received by the acting deputy director general of the Magistrates Court Services, Tsietsi Malema, and the Sebokeng Community Policing Forum Chairperson, Bikie Nketle.
The regional head of the Gauteng Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, Elizabeth Dlamini, responded by letter to the youth. She said a steering committee had been established to deal with the issues raised by the Greater Sebokeng ANCYL.
Dlamini said the committee requested to be granted a further extension of 21 days in which to provide feed-back to the organisation as some of the issues will require considerable time to receive proper attention.
She said the committee will reconvene on November 10 to further deal with the issues listed in the memorandum.
