The municipality has to increase tariffs, levies, charges during these tough economic times. The impact of inflationary pressures, salary increases, increase in the bulk purchase of electricity & water and cost of goods and services for repairs and maintenance and infrastructure, upgrades as well as vandalism and theft are factors beyond the control of the municipality. The municipality has therefore sanctioned the following increases for the 2016/2017 financial year:
- Assessment Rates = 8%
- Water = 12% (Rand Water increase – 12.9%)
- Sewer = 12%
- Electricity = 12% (Eskom increase – 9.4%)
- Waste = 9%
- Other tariffs = 12%
It is in everybody’s interest to partner with the municipality to report vandalism of infrastructure, theft, illegal bypass or bridging of electricity and municipal services as these impacts directly on the cost of these services. Similarly, all water leaks must be reported as soon as possible.
Emfuleni Local Municipality is also in the process of finalizing and testing a tariff model initiated by Provincial CoGTA and Provincial Treasury which will address the fairness and cost-effectiveness of the tariffs, levies, charges.
