MEYERTON. – For two consecutive weeks, at least 4000 illegal occupants travelled from as far as Soshanguve (Pretoria), Katlehong and Thokoza. These crowds were seen queuing to register for land in Peels Farm in Meyerton.
Each person was said to have paid R15 to access a stand. It is alleged that R10 was used to pay bail for the arrested ‘comrades’ who had previously issued the stands illegally, while the other R5 was for assisting the ‘officials’ to market the stands.
A few days later this illegal ‘registration’ for land was stopped, not without resistance, after the Red Ants arrived and destroyed the illegal shacks. Peels Farm is privately owned and fell in Ward 12, which was previously ANC-led but was won by the DA in last weeks’ local government elections.
