The exact cause of the accident is still unclear, but the driver presumably lost control of the car after which it rolled and ended up in a stormwater ditch. When the emergency staff of Midvaal Protection Services arrived on the scene, they found one patient next to the car and two still trapped inside the vehicle. All three persons were in a serious condition and received advanced life support on the scene. One of the patients was then lifted to the intensive care unit of the Union Hospital in Alberton by helicopter, while the other two were transported by ambulance.
The police have not yet released the identities of the injured persons.
* The Midvaal Protection Services Section is making a public appeal to passers-by at accident scenes to behave appropriately as they are experiencing problems with people trying to push through cordoned-off areas, not adhering to officials’ instructions and most distressingly, trying to take photos of the accident scene which they then later post on social media.
According to emergency staff, the behaviour of such individuals interferes with the ability of the emergency services teams to conduct their vital work. They would like to stress that if members of the public interfere at an accident scene, they could be endangering the lives of those involved. Members of the public often also place themselves in danger through indiscriminate parking or by standing in dangerous positions to get a better view of an accident scene.
“The call from Midvaal Protection Services is for respect to be shown towards those involved in accidents.
People often post incorrect information on social media, causing trauma to friends and families of the victims,” a spokesperson said in a media statement. Official information should only be gained directly from the Midvaal Protection Services Department on (016) 360 7500.
