Three killed, many injured in head-on collision
Three men have been killed and at least 20 more injured this afternoon after a taxi, transporter and bakkie collided on the R82 in Walkerville, south of Johannesburg.
Three men have been killed and at least 20 more injured this afternoon after a taxi, transporter and bakkie collided on the R82 in Walkerville, south of Johannesburg.
ER24 paramedics, along with various other services, arrived on the scene and found the three vehicles in the middle of the road. All three vehicles had sustained a large amount of damage in the collision.
On inspection, paramedics discovered three bodies lying inside the transporter and at least 20 more patients lying all around the scene.
Paramedics assessed the patients and found that the three men lying inside the transporter had already succumbed to their multiple fatal injuries. Nothing more could be done for them and they were declared dead on the scene.
At least 20 other patients were found on scene with various injuries. Several patients were found to have sustained multiple injuries, leaving them in a critical condition.
Paramedics immediately set up a triage area and began treating the patients. The critically injured were also provided with numerous advanced life support interventions. Once treated, three critically injured patients, including a 7-year-old boy, was airlifted by Netcare helicopters to nearby hospitals for urgent care.
The remaining patients on scene were treated and transported by various services to nearby facilities.
The road was closed for some time due to the collision.
The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
