The NWU Vaal yesterday released this information to its Campus community:
The 2016 resurgence of the national #FeesMustFall protest on university campuses countrywide – which have been characterised by violent protests and stand-offs between police and students, have dominated the media scene ever since the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr. Blade Nzimande’s address on 20 September 2016.

The Vaal Triangle of the North-West University (NWU Vaal) has not been spared. In an effort to ensure stability, prevent any illegal activities on the Campus and that students successfully complete the academic year, an urgent Court Interdict was obtained on 22 September 2016. The final Court Interdict (https://goo.gl/uNjNIh) was granted on 11 October 2016. Recent incidents of violent protests and the disruption of academic activities by demonstrating students have forced the Campus Management to review its efforts to maintain a stable and academically conducive campus environment.

Campus Management supports the call for free and quality education and has engaged with the CSRC on various occasions managing to address key-concerns such as the rescheduling of the examinations to allow for more preparation time. It remains Management’s belief that all avenues of discussion should be investigated but that it should take place in a structured and orderly fashion to ensure that all voices are heard. Members of the Vaal Campus community are working round the clock to keep the campus open in order to successfully complete the academic year. In this regard we are calling on all stakeholders to join us in our pursuit to ensure a safe and stable environment in which our students can flourish. Together we can champion the cause of all students who want to attend classes, study and write examinations.

We aim to do this by acting with no tolerance towards those who are causing disruption on campus and who are intimidating fellow-students and staff members. Against the backdrop of the protest actions that took place on Friday (14 October 2016) and Monday (17 October 2016), the security presence on Campus will be intensified and the following measures will be in place as from Thursday, 20 October 2016:

• Students who are found to be wearing masks or anything which
hides their identity will be arrested.
• Any person entering the Campus must provide his/her student
or staff access card. In cases where these access cards can’t
be presented, a valid copy of their ID document, ID card,
driver’s license or passport must to be presented.
• All vehicles will be searched upon arrival at the Campus as well
as on departure. Please also note that the driver has to
produce his/her student or staff access card and that all
passengers must get out of the vehicle and enter through the
turnstile gate.
• Routine searches of vehicles and/ backpacks may be
conducted.
• Any illegal gathering as stipulated in the Court Interdict will be
prohibited and warrants arrest.

Lecturing activities will continue as normal on Thursday, 20 October 2016.

Any suspicious activities that might compromise the safety of staff and students should be reported to Mr. Kobus Potgieter at 016 910 3132 / 082 665 4386, Mr. Burger Scholtz at 016 910 3580 / 082 446 5383 or Mr. Pieter Steenkamp on 079 524 1139.
