An R7m project to extend the Kookrus Cemetery was completed after being launched in 2022.
According to the Midvaal Local Municipality, the development aims to boost burial space and allow residents to lay their loved ones to rest with dignity.

“The extension includes the construction of an ablution block, service roads and landscaping. A dedicated caretaker will also be appointed to ensure that the cemetery is kept clean and well maintained,” the municipality said.

Existing active cemeteries in Meyerton and Kookrus are near 90% capacity. Municipal officials said the expansion is part of a plan to tackle the growing demand for graves, with the extended grounds expected to secure adequate burial capacity for at least the next six years.

Emphasising the deep significance of these spaces to local families, the municipality noted that it is proactively investing in burial infrastructure and ongoing maintenance to support the community.
