Michelle Koekemoer (9) still had her entire life in ahead of her, but that was taken away from her by her own mother.
Earlier this year the court heard that Soniya wanted to take her life and her daughter’s because they struggled a lot. According to magistrate Button Michelle’s father failed them and so did Soniya’s entire family because they could have offered to help.
The court sees a murder of a child in a very serious light and it is the responsibility of the court to bear the child’s best interests at heart. However he believes that Soniya can be rehabilitated in jail and she is the one who will have to live with her guilty conscious for the rest of her life.
Soniya’s other child is in foster care.
