Drunk driver hits paramedic

The driver of a bakkie from Bophelong, heading to Evaton, did not stop at the accident scene. He hit and injured the paramedic as he was attending to a patient before also crashing into the ER24 micro-bus. The paramedic was rushed to hospital.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – The drunken driver of a blue Nissan bakkie nearly cost a paramedic his life. An ER24 paramedic was attending to a patient at an accident scene.

The driver of a bakkie from Bophelong, heading to Evaton, did not stop at the accident scene. He hit and injured the paramedic as he was attending to a patient before also crashing into the ER24 micro-bus. The paramedic was rushed to hospital.
The accident happened on the Golden Highway behind Mittal industrial at around 20:00, on Friday. The police and the paramedics were alerted to the accident scene.
After the accident, the driver of the bakkie was attended to by the police and paramedics. He could not free himself because he was trapped behind the steering wheel. Immediately after he was pulled out, it was discovered that he was heavily under the influence of alcohol as he was unable to stand.
He was arrested and carried to the police bakkie.
One of the five occupants of a white Renault Cleo, Ronald Bothma (19), from North West University Potchefstroom campus, said they were on their way from Potch to Durban and were heading to the intersection of Sasolburg, Parys, Johannesburg (N1) and Sebokeng on the Golden Highway.
Apparently the driver of the Renault tried to overtake and collided with a grey Corolla. The Corolla was from Bophelong and going towards Boitumelo.
Both vehicles, including the bakkie, were beyond repair. The police are investigating a case of reckless driving, negligence and drunk driving.All the injured occupants were transported to various hospitals.
