Five arrested for stokvel money theft

Rumour has it that the robbery was an ‘inside job’ because the robbers seemed to know exactly where the money was kept.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – A bleak Christmas is faced by employees of a well-known steel giant company following a R50 000 stokvel money robbery.

The suspects allegedly broke into a safe where the employees kept the money, during the wee hours of last Tuesday and made off with the cash. The cash had apparently been kept there from January this year with the aim of handing it out at the end of the year.

Rumour has it that the robbery was an ‘inside job’ because the robbers seemed to know exactly where the money was kept. “The suspects allegedly threatened a worker with a firearm and forced him to hand over the keys to the safe,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Gertrude Makhale.

She said the Vanderbijlpark Police Trio Task team were alerted and they arrested five suspects from Steel Park, Boipatong and Bophelong on Saturday.Four of the suspects are linked to various other robberies.
Police said that, among the suspects, one was linked to seven cases of stolen vehicles and that two of the suspects are from Zola and Doornkop in Soweto.
