SEBOKENG. – No longer shall it be permitted that albinos are killed with the belief that their skin (bodies) will provide powerful muthi.
This was the theme and message that was passed to those in attendance by local historian, businessman, author and musician Xoli Nosenga during the Nelson Mandela Day celebrations that were held at Qedilizwe Secondary School last Thursday.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Nosenga said that the myth that people with albinism possess luck and fortune should come to the end as there are still people who believe that when they kill a person with albinism, they will get rich and have super powers.
Nosenga further added that statistics reveal that between the year 1998 and 2015 about 164 people with Albinism were killed, and 264 others attacked in 25 African countries ranging from Tanzania to Burundi.
“I’m even ashamed to mention that here at home South Africa about four people living with Albinism are killed in one month. People with albinism being poached like animals for their skin and body parts forced me to start a national campaign. It’s time we show love to our country by protecting each other,” Nosenga said.
The philanthropic Nosenga, donated over fifty sunscreen lotions to children with albinism on the day.
“It is really sad to see our people still practicing this barbaric, hatred (ing) and horrible act of evil in these days of the fourth Industrial revolution. We need to stop calling our brothers and sister with albinism names like ‘inkawu’ (monkeys) because we are saying they are animals and deserve to be killed”
