Even children risked their lives to join elderly to clean their townships because the municipality has not collected refuse or waste.
Sedibeng Ster spotted the young people cleaning the dumping area next to the street in main entrance of Boipatong. Ironically, they were without masks and gloves as they continued to clean.
When Sedibeng Ster asked if they are aware that they put their lives at risk, they said there is nothing that they can do because the rubbish come to their yards.
They said that they cannot live in such conditions where plastics are all over their yards.
This dumping place is at the entrance of Boipatong.
“Grootman, what are we supposed to do because everyone one is dumping here. Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) doesn’t come to collect this waste. The municipality only collects waste in town not here in the township. We are aware that we put our lives at risk but this rubbish is worse than COVID-19 pandemic because it comes to our houses,” they told Sedibeng Ster.
They pleaded with Sedibeng Ster to inform ELM about their challenges they experience as residents who stay in the entrance of Boipatong.
