Dead baby found at Vereeniging Showgrounds

VEREENIGING. – “The baby had fully developed hands and feet but was thrown away like a piece of trash. What sort of society are we to allow this kind of thing?”

This is the question that Wiekus Pretorius, a resident of Vereeniging, is left with after discovering the body of a dead baby in a veld along Van Riebeeck Avenue.

“I noticed a bunch of people standing around the scene (on Thursday morning 2 July) and as I approached, I discovered that it was a baby.

“It looked like the infant was wrapped in a black plastic bag and just left there. Surprisingly, people were standing around and taking photographs. Nobody had phoned the police up until that moment.”

Wiekus took it upon himself to notify the authorities and phoned the police. He later flagged down a passing ambulance and then a police vehicle.

Captain Fikile Funda, a spokesperson for the Vereeniging police says: “We can confirm that  we are investigating a case of inquest after an infant was found in Van Riebeeck street opposite the Vaal Show grounds.”

“The infant was wrapped in a black plastic bag.”

“No suspect arrested, investigation is ongoing. Anyone who might know about the incident is urged to contact Vereeniging SAPS on (016) 450-2263 or unanimously contact crime stop on 08600 10-111,” concluded Funda.
