An effective 80 years sentence for rapist

The accused would hide or cover his face, forcefully grabbing the victims and threatening them with a knife before raping and robbing them.

SASOLBURG. – A 37-year-old man, Anele Headman Gqorholo, will spend an effective 80 years in jail after being found guilty for rape and other counts by the Sasolburg High Court recently.

Handing over the heavy the sentence, the magistrates said that Gqorholo never showed remorse throughout the court proceedings except that at the time the judges read the sentence, he shook his head as a gesture of doubting the court. Gqorholo was sentenced to 80 years on the count of rape, 75 years for aggravated robbery, 5 years for compelled sexual assault, 2 years for theft, 6 years for sexual assault and 3 years for house breaking and theft.

All sentences will run concurrently and he will serve an effective 80 years in prison.The incidents took place from 2015 to 2019 and the victims are females age between 18 and 31.

The court heard that at the time of committing the crimes, Gqorholo, a father of three was working as a security guard.  The victims were targeted while walking home in the early hours of the morning. The accused would hide or cover his face, forcefully grabbing the victims and threatening them with a knife before raping and robbing them of their belongings. He would further carry on to break into other victim’s homes while they were asleep, and rape them in front of their siblings and children.

Gqorholo was arrested on 8 August 2019 and has since been in custody
