‘Divencheng’ community protests
"It is more than three months now that we are without electricity, we actually spent the whole of winter without it."
SHARPEVILLE.- The Divencheng informal settlement community members have said that they have had enough. The informal settlement is just outside Sharpeville. The community closed road between Sharpeville and Phase 3, Tshepiso in protest over electricity on the weekend. It was chaos with young and old especially women blocking the road with stones, burning tyres and objects to prevent motorists from passing.
“We have had enough because we have been told that we don’t belong to any municipality structure when we try to find out why our electricity is not being fixed. It is more than three months now that we are without electricity, we actually spent the whole of winter without it. We even went to the house of our local councillor but nothing has happened, our children are back at school and what do they expect us to iron their clothes with since we don’t have electricity,” said angry community members.
