SEDIBENG.- The African National Congress (ANC), South African Communist Party (SACP), Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the South African National Civic Organization (SANCO) in Gauteng recently met during a Political Council to receive a report from the ANC-led Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG). It was at this meeting that the Alliance welcomed and commended the Provincial Government for what they said was a comprehensive COVID-19 intervention and the economic reconstruction and recovery plan and called on the people of Gauteng to unite behind the government’s vaccine roll-out programme. The Political Council is a meeting of the Provincial Office Bearers (POBs) of the Alliance structures. The report is said to have focused on the two challenges facing the people of the province, COVID-19 pandemic and the economic reconstruction and recovery plan. “The Alliance reaffirmed its commitment to the profound and historic principles of unity as the most primary basis for the unity of the motive forces of the National Democratic Revolution (NDR) and the people of the province. We further reaffirmed our shared and common view that the unity of the alliance provides the most solid basis upon which to fight contemporary challenges such as the current COVID-19 pandemic, reconstruct and recover the economy, and sustain stability and cohesion of the province and its state institutions at all levels of the province,” the Alliance members said in a statement. “We are confident that faced with these unique challenges, the GPG has done remarkably well to protect lives of the people and lay a solid basis for economic reconstruction and recovery. We welcomed interventions and measures to contain the spread of the virus including the festive period law enforcement activities, the delivery of state-of-the-art infrastructure, the provision of quality healthcare, the efficient and effective management of mortal remains, and the revolutionary work done by all our frontline healthcare workers.” The Alliance further directed the ANC-led government to urgently finalise its provincial vaccine roll-out programme and unveil it to the people of the province. “In this regard, we reaffirm our absolute confidence in the government vaccine roll-out programme. Furthermore, we call on the people of the province to firmly unite and consolidate their overwhelming positive response behind the GPG vaccine roll-out programme.” The Alliance called on the people of Gauteng to continue to practice and observe the COVID-19 protocols such as wearing of masks, washing and sanitizing of hands, social distancing, respect of the curfew and avoiding unnecessary travel.
