Community hails Mokoma as their football hero

SEBOKENG.- The Zone 13 Sebokeng community has hailed Joseph “Matutja” Mokoma as their unsung football hero.
Mokoma (60) has taken it upon himself to teach soccer skills to youngsters at the Zone 13 soccer ground next to Technical College. Despite his age, Mokoma is still able to run up and down the field teaching future Bafana-Bafana stars football.

Sedibeng Ster Sport visit Mokoma at his home in Zone 13 over the weekend where he took us down memory lane to the days he was still a soccer player himself.
He recently revived the legendary Black Rhinos FC, which was one of the powerhouses in amateur football in Vaal. Mokoma said that he decided to revive Black Rhinos FC to is keep youngsters busy, seeing that most of them have nothing to do.
Mokoma said that former Jomo Cosmos and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Avril “Chawe” Phali also once played for Black Rhinos FC even though some teams were quick to take him because of his potential. Thabo Rakhale is another player who once played for Mokoma’s club at the age of 13.
“There are no clubs in Zone 13 compared to how it used to be back in my day.
“You see this ground, it used to be packed to capacity when we still had teams like Kora Greats, Junior Chiefs and A-Z FC to mention but few. I was playing for Black Rhinos FC and I grew up in football.
“I am ploughing back to my community by teaching these boys soccer. Regardless of challenges, my community is assisting me but there is a need for soccer kits.
“We have three divisions and they share one soccer kit. My wish is to see each division playing with their own jerseys, taking into consideration the COVID-19 regulations and health protocols,” he said.
Community members described Mokoma as a selfless individual who has always had a positive contribution to the community. “As parents we are happy because our children are in good hands. Ntate Mokoma is our hero because he takes care of our children. We wish local business people can help him with soccer kits because he is doing a great job for our community,” said community members.
Those who would like to see Mokoma in action or to assist they are welcome to visit him at the soccer ground next to Zone 13 Technical College from Monday to Friday from 15:00.
