VANDERBIJLPARK.- The Gauteng Regional Play-offs came to an end at the NWU Vaal Campus with Mamelodi Newcastle United, and Alexandra Gunners FC promoted to the ABC Motsepe League over the weekend.
This was after these two teams finished first and second in the top of the log standing at the end of the Play-offs. Mamelodi Newcastle United finished at the top of the log with ten points after four games, winning three of their group stages games with only one draw. Second placed, Alexandra Gunners finished second placed with seven points from four games. They won two of their games, lost one and drew 1. The Sedibeng representatives, Real Barcelona FC failed to gain promotion to the ABC Motsepe League after they lost two of their last matches in the Play-offs games. There was high expectation after Real Barcelona FC won both of their opening fixtures of their Play-offs last weekend.
However, things went from bad to worse when they lost 2-1 against Alexandra Gunners FC in the first game of the day. They were supposed to play this game in order to try and get a draw to put some pressure on the teams at the top of the log. To make it worse, they lost their last game against top of the table Mamelodi Newcastle FC 3-1.
Despite the two defeats the home team put on a brave fight in both games and even missed a penalty in their first game.
They could have forced the game to a 2-2 draw, but it was not to be. SAFA Sedibeng President and Emfuleni Local Football Association (ELFA) Chairman, Solly Mkhabela and Jabu Mngcina came to support the home team.
