MMC Motsamai assists flood victims in Sicelo

Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) MMC for Development and Planning Mokete Motsamai together with his team recently visited an informal settlement in Sicelo to conduct a flood hazard assessment.

MIDVAAL. – The visit follows recent heavy rains which flooded shacks belonging to about six families and further damaged their furniture. The objective of the visit was to provide immediate relief to those who had been affected by the floods.

Motsamai says, “There hasn’t been major infrastructure damage, however we have identified four shacks as flooding hotspots and at risk during the heavy rains.”

As a result, Motsamai instructed the department that those affected must be provided with alternative accommodation as floods are pervasive during severe thunderstorms.

“We have already made arrangements for four families to be relocated. The other two do not have to move as we will have our Engineering Department grade and deal with the storm water issues in the area.”

Motsamai states that MLM is currently implementing a ‘Reblocking Project’ which will result in the de-densification of Sicelo Extension 4 and 5. “Once the Reblocking is complete, all families and households will be provided with proper housing opportunities and services.”

Motsamai says that MLM Mayor together with all the MMCs have always been on the ground and availed themselves as the leadership in Midvaal.

“This makes it easy for us to understand the issues faced by our community and respond appropriately.”
