SEDIBENG.- For two weeks in arow the Emfuleni Local Football Associations (ELFA) Super League matches have been called off due to heavy rains.
This past week the games were scheduled to take place at Bophelong, Boipatong, Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex in Sebokeng and George Thabe Stadium in Sharpeville. It was raining non stop and some teams that had travelled from as far as from Sasolburg could only find the fields were not playable. There was water all over the field just like last weekend which forced the games to be cancelled. However, some of the team took advantage with this situation to register their games as a walkover because some of the teams failed to show up or others arrived late to the games due to the heavy rain.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, one of the clubs coaches said he was informed when he arrived at the stadium that their opponents had ‘rolled’ for them. To make it worse, he said there was no poles in the field, but their opponents registered the walkover.
“When we arrived at the stadium, we were told that the team that we were supposed to play against had left and the match officials registered the game as a walkover. I asked myself how this can be a walkover because there were not even soccer poles in the field. Look, even the SAB League match wasn’t played because the field was not playable. There is no parent who would allow their children to go out in such a weather taking into consideration COVID-19 is still here as well. All the games were cancelled but our game is a walkover, how so? It was raining and we had to collect players from door to door just to be at the venue even though we knew the games won’t played because of the conditions of the field but I was surprised when I was told that we lost the game via a walkover. If this is the case, I think it will be hard to continue playing in this league,” said the club coach.
