Suspects arrested for cable theft at substation

A neighborhood watch tactical team alerted the police about the suspected criminal activities of people digging the cables.

VANDERBIJLPARK. Four suspects were arrested in connection with tampering with the electricity while six others escaped arrest.

This comes after a neighborhood watch tactical team alerted the police about the suspected criminal activities of people digging the cables. A 35-old-suspect from Small Farms, in Evaton was arrested in possession of a 200 meter cable valued at R100 000, this is after the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) major substations caught fire within three consecutive days in Vanderbijlpark recently.

Emfuleni Municipality spokesperson Lebo Mofokeng said two males and two females that include a security guard who was on duty at the time, were apprehended in a sting operation on 19 April. She said before the substation exploded an Amarok bakkie was seen entering the  substation. The suspects are expected to appear  at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates court.
