Red Ants remove illegal squatters

Some community leaders are said to have illegally sold stands to the members of the community.

SEBOKENG.- In the company of the police, the Red Ants left no stone unturned during evictions that took place in Lethabo, Waterdale informal settlement just outside of Sebokeng on Monday.

The sounds of gunfire and that of the shacks being demolished were heard in the morning around 09.00. At least more than 500 members of the Red Ants demolished about 120 shacks. They left behind about 1 200 shacks that include brick built houses to continue demolishing for the next coming three days. The destructions came after a Developer known as Sed Square Construction served the shack dwellers with eviction orders.

As the Red Ants arrived most of the owners were not home. Those that were home tried to engage with Police, Red Ants and the Sheriff officers without luck as their pleas fell on the deaf ears. They were told openly that the order had already been issued. The Sheriffs of the court were heard telling residents that the third eviction order was issued last year around October. Some of the community members, who have spent more than six years at the place, said that they blamed somone known as ‘Mkholo’ for their misery. They alleged that Mkholo is one of the leaders who collected money for the stands and that they paid between R5 000 and R7 000 per stand. The owners of those remaining, standing structures were told that before the next day, Tuesday, they should be out of the area.
