ELM workers can’t wait longer for their backdated salaries

The 'gatvol' employees of Metsi-a-Lekoa have warned the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Executive Mayor and his Municipal Manager (MM) to stop playing tricks and start paying workers what is due to them.

VANDERBIJLPARK. This is after the Shop Stewards joined the workers to march to the ELM’s Head Offices in Vanderbijlpark on Monday, June 6, where they were adressed by Bob Mthembu from the Executive Mayors’ office.

The workers said that they are capable of dragging their feet and deliberately render poor services to the community. An employee, Oupa Radebe said that they were expecting to be addressed by either the Executive Mayor,Sipho Radebe or MM, Lucky Leseane on the issue of their monies. According to a Bargaining Council agreement in 2017, the ELM was supposed to pay workers at least half of their back dated salaries.

” We warned the municipality not to push us and we come here because of the circumstances back home. We are the people wearing the overalls but we are always being undermined,” said Radebe.

Mthembu said that he sympathetises with the workers and that the MM will try to speed up their concerns.

” It is not that we undermine you. We respect and honour your performance. Give us a week to sort this matter out,” said Mthembu.
