
BOPHELONG.- These memorial games were held to honour fallen heroes who were involved in sports as players and administrators.
Some of those fallen heroes are Meshack “Maradona” Tsotetsi, Siyabonga “Phala” Mabala, Modupi Leshaba, “Four Piece” Moloefane, Monosi Konopi, Sonti Mqikela, and Nkosana “Cowzen” Mthimkulu to mention but few. Mthimkulu made history when he led the now defunct Boipatong Real Rangers to the last 16 of the BobSave Super Bowl competition. Real Rangers FC was one of the most fearless amateur football clubs that produced household name in South African Football such as former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoens, Senzo Mbatha, Papi Zothwane, Lungisane Ndhela, Solomon Mathe and the list is endless.

Meshack “Maradona” Tsotetsi was one of the celebrated players in the South African football to have come out of this township. He made his mark in South African football when he played for Free State Stars formerly Qwaqwa Stars and later Wits. The masters’ teams that participated in this successful memorial games include the Boipatong Masters, Sharpeville Masters and McKenzie Foundation. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport Skhumbozo “Taka” Nkonyane hailed this annual memorial games as a success. He told Sedibeng Ster Sport that, the day went as planned with the Boipatong community coming in big numbers to support this initiative. Nkoyane said he was overwhelmed by the kind of support they received from the Boipatong community on the day.
“I want to take this opportunity thank everyone for making this event a success especially Boipatong community. The aim is to make this event bigger and better come next years with the help of local businesses and companies. I have no doubt that this initiative can be bigger than this and attract more sponsorships,” said Nkonyane who is also a former Boipatong Ranger FC player.
