About seven students have been arrested and charged with damage to property

VANDRBIJLPARK. – The police have arrested about Seven students aged between 18 and 26 in Bedworth Park after one of the student residences was set on fire. The incident happened on Monday..

Police spokesperson, Captain Fikile Funda reports that there was a misunderstanding between the students and the management of the Residence over NSFAS payments.

“The students set furniture from the Residence on fire, this includes washing machines, fridges, laptops, printers and CCTV cameras in the guard room and the administration office.” Funda reports that the damage is estimated to be around R200 000.

“We are investigating a case of malicious damage to property and the suspects are due to appear in court soon.” Vaal University Of Technology (VUT) Student Representative Council (SRC) Secretary General, Ntsako Qhibi said that he was alerted about the incident and rushed to the premises on Monday.

“On my arrival, students told me that they had a disagreement with the Res manager after they demanded refunds from their NSFAS accommodation money to pay for alternative accommodation.

“I cannot confirm how negotiations went between the students and the manager as I got there after the fire had been started.

“It’s saddening that the students are now in jail because they came here to get an education.”

Dumile Mlambo, the HOD for Corporate Communication at VUT says, “ The building is a private accredited residence and does not belong to VUT. The dispute emanates from a difference regarding requests for refunds from students who resided in that building.

“Students sign individual lease agreements with landlords. For example, where students have paid a deposit, they have to liaise directly with the landlord.”

Funda said that the arrested suspects would appear in court soon.
