MIDVAAL – A demonstrating crowd embarked on an Anti-racism march to the council offices to handover a memorandum of grievances on alleged spiking racism in Midvaal.
Carrying placards, ANC flags, singing and chanting struggle songs, furious protesters demanded the Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) Mayor to receive the memorandum.

The demonstration stems from a viral video which saw a Midvaal man accosting Mpho Mbhele, a waiter at a local eatery and dragging him on the streets.

Following the video, the community was enraged with many calling for the head of the ‘racist man’.
The perpetrator is alleged to have slapped on of the managers on the day and threatening staff members with a knife he took from the kitchen.
Addressing the gathered crowds, Sedibeng regional Chairperson Thulani Kunene said the march was the first of many.

“Till we see change on how people are treated in this municipality (region), we will not stop marching. This is one of many marches until you change how you treat our people,” he said.
“We will keep on visiting you.”
Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Development and Planning Mokete Motsamai, received the memorandum on behalf of Mayor Peter Teixeira.
“I am sent by the Mayor to receive the memorandum on his behalf because he has other commitments. I’ve noted the contents and the council will respond on the issues within the given time frame,” he said.

Marchers gave the council seven days to respond to their grievances.
