VANDERBIJLPARK. – This follows a jam-packed audience at the Vaal University of Technology where a production named ‘The Pen’ was performed.

The event took place on November 19th. The event formed part of the creative industries marketing stokvel program in conjunction with the Emfuleni Local Municipality.

The Pen, written by Monde Mayephu tells a story of a young Playwright, Sipho who is in the process of writing a new play.

The writer who starts to experience writer’s block lands up in a love triangle after he becomes intrigued by his muse.

Speaking to Director and Producer from Motswako, Abbey Maeane explained that this was the first time he was challenged with making a production without funding.
“It was quite a challenge as we had to use our very own resources to bring the production to the people. We were tasked with using our own resources from the beginning to the end.”

Maeane said that he was excited to be part of the “stokvel” promoting home grown talent at VUT. “I would say that the event was successful because this was evident in the number of people who came to support us on the day.
Maeane further applauded the actors Bafana Tsepe who plays Sipho, Nolukhanyo Mgquba Playing Pinky and Rorisang Ndabezitha who played Thandi.

“The script was well written and tight and they were all able to execute it.
“I believe that it was a pleasure for the audience to watch.” Both Tsepe and Mgquba agreed that the challenge was one that brought growth to them with regards to their acting skills.
“We really had to challenge ourselves in order to execute what was expected from us.”

Maeane said that he believes that there is a space for theatre in the Vaal as a lot of people have started supporting it, travelling to places far just to see their favourite productions.
