Female tiger on the loose in Walkerville, community urged to be vigilant

MIDVAAL. – The community of Walkerville is urged to be on the look out following the escape of female tiger from a smallholding in Walker’s Fruit Farms on Saturday evening. It is alleged that the animal escaped after unknown perpetrators cut the fence.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello says, “It is reported that the tiger escaped from its cage and attacked a 39-year-old man and a dog in the area. Members of the public are warned not to approach the animal for their own safety.”
Community Emergency Response Team – South Africa (CERT-SA) says that their Vaal crew responded to the Highbury area in Randvaal for reports of a patient attacked by a Tiger.
“On arrival, crews found a male patient and his dog with multiple bite wounds. The patient was treated on scene and transported to a nearby hospital by ER24.
The dog was severely injured and was euthanized on scene by members of the SPCA.”
“Members of Neighborhood Farm Watch, The SPCA and Kliprivier SAPS remained on scene, a helicopter was also brought in to help locate the tiger.”
Midvaal Local Municipilty (MLM) warned residents against approaching the animal, stating that it is aggressive.
“Residents in surrounding areas are urged to stay inside and keep their pets safe.”
