VANDERBIJLPARK. – The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner of police, General Elias Mawela has condemned the fatal shooting of a woman at Vanderbijlpark police station on Monday.
The woman was shot and killed, allegedly by her husband following a domestic violence dispute.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili said that members posted at the community service centre in Vanderbijlpark called for backup from neighbouring police stations thinking that they were under attack after they heard gunshots within the station perimeter.
“However after investigating, they discovered that a husband had allegedly shot and killed his wife at the back of the police station.”
According to Muridili, a preliminary investigation revealed that a high speed car chase between the wife and husband ended at the police station when the wife crashed her car into a ditch at the back of the police station building.
“It is reported that the husband then walked toward the wife’s vehicle and fatally shot her. Following the incident, police came out and fired towards the husband who at the time still had the firearm in his hand. The firearm was seized and the husband was placed under arrest with no injuries,” Muridili stated.
Police suspect that the woman was seeking refuge at the police station following a domestic dispute.
Mawela said, “A police station is supposed to be a safe haven for victims of crime. It must never happen again that a perpetrator follows their victim to the police station to commit such a heinous offence.”
Mawela emphasized the call by Gauteng police for the public to find amicable ways of resolving conflict without resorting to violence.
Muridili confirmed that a murder case docket is opened for investigation.
“The suspect will appear in court soon,” Muridili concluded.
