Culpable homicide case opened after a bus toppled over a four-year-old boy in Lakeside

A culpable homicide case has been opened with South African Police Services after a bus toppled over a four-year-old boy on Monday afternoon.

LAKESIDE – The bus was making a turn on corner St Patrick and Sebe road where Amohelang (deceased) was walking along side his mother, Lerato Morake prior the horrific incident.

Before the duo realized, the bus dragged Amohelang to the steel crash barriers placed on the side, trapping his upper body inside the wheel arch and his bottom part between the bus and barriers.

Police attended to the scene, where the boy was trapped and dozens of bystanders looked on helplessly.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Lerato, mother to the deceased, shared shocking details of how her son was killed.

“We were coming from Amohelang’s paternal home in Zone 3, going to Temalebone [home]. I was holding my son and carrying my daughter on my back when we saw the bus driving close to us.  When we were about to run from it, Amohelang was dragged and all I could hear was him screaming,” she said.

“I tried to yell the driver to stop but everything happed so quick. I watched my son getting swallowed by the tyres gap and getting pressed by the bus on the steel barriers. I couldn’t pull him out and he was quiet. Right there, I knew he had passed on,” she added.

Lerato said the driver sat in the bus after stopping and never bothered to look what he had done.

“The bus was stopped by the barriers cushioning with my son’s lifeless body and the driver never bothered to come out. I ran to his door and told him to come out and look what he had done. He held his hands to his head and said to me ‘it was a mere accident’ and that he is sorry,” she said.

The visibly devastated mother of two said she was heartbroken and hopes justice prevail.

“I am broken. I lost my little boy and the driver didn’t show remorse after the incident. He didn’t even bother to go look. I am hoping for justice and the driver locked away for killing Amo,” she said.

Police spokesman Captain Fikile Funda said a case of culpable homicide has been opened and the bus driver was arrested.
