Former chairperson of parole board sent to jail

The accused was found guilty of submitting a fraudulent statement to mislead a judge to issue a conversion of sentence to an undeserving prisoner.

SASOLBURG. – The Kroonstad Regional Court has sentenced the former chairperson of the Groenpunt Correctional Services’s parole board, David Litsoane (63), to seven years imprisonment on charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice. Litsoane will effectively spend four years behind bars.

Police spokesperson Captain Christopher Singo said the case, which was finalised on Tuesday 31 January, stemmed from an incident that took place between February and May 2015, when Litsoane was the chairperson of the parole board at Groenpunt in the Vaal Triangle.

According to Singo, Litsoane submitted a fraudulent statement to mislead a judge to issue a conversion of sentence to a prisoner who was serving a 22-year sentence for multiple charges of fraud involving R19 million.

“The sentenced prisoner did not qualify to be released on parole or to have his sentence converted. The matter was then reported to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team based in Bloemfontein,” Singo added.
Litsoane was issued with a summons on 30 July 2020 and appeared in court on several occasions until his recent conviction.

“The court sentenced Litsoane to seven years imprisonment, of which three years were suspended. He will effectively serve four years’ direct imprisonment,” Singo added.
