Selinah Mnguni, Sharpeville massacre victim dies

One of the Sharpeville massacre victims, Selinah Mnguni has passed.

SHARPEVILLE – Mnguni was one of the female survivors who escaped the bloody massacre where 69 protesters who were demonstrating against passing laws were shot and killed.

On the day of the massacre, Mnguni was only 23 years old and heavily pregnant when she was shot.

The 87-year-old was always enthusiastic about sharing the horrific story of the Massacre.

Although she was always pointing out how the government failed them, the gogo went beyond the grave without seeing any of the government’s promises materializing.

During her media interviews, Mnguni always told her story of how she was shot and taken to the Old Vereeniging hospital.

“I was asleep and suddenly heard flying machines and commotion of people running outside. Because I was staying at a corner house, I went outside to see what was happening,” she shared.

Little did Selina know at the time that dozens of fleeing protesters were being mowed down by police in Saracens not too far from her home.

“As I walked in the street, people were running everywhere and there was a lot of shooting and a bullet went through my left thigh and I fell to the ground,” she said.

The next thing she remembered was waking up in a hospital with a nurse attending to her wounds.

The scores of injured victims and survivors spent days at the hospital and were later transferred.

After she was transferred from the old Vereeniging hospital to Baragwanath hospital, she says together with other survivors they were arrested and detained.

“We spent a few days at the old Vereeniging hospital before were moved to Bara. Before we even recovered from our injuries, we were taken from Bara thinking we were going home, only to find out we were being arrested,” she said.

Following her release after her husband paid bail for her, Selina learned that her brother-in-law was killed in a massacre.
