SEDIBENG.- The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Sedibeng has urged the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) to set up illegal dumping campaigns in the area.
The party, through its Sedibeng Regional Chairperson Isaac Khithika, said that the current situation of illegal dumping in the local communities has normalised the situation and that this has misled the community into believing that it is normal. Khithika said that the residents should be given through explanations of the impact of littering.
“Information must be given on how the community can make a living from recyclable waste Failure by the municipality to provide adequate and reliable refuse removal poses severe health hazards. We can safely say that the municipality’s’s failure to provide educational awareness and collect waste has become the biggest enabler and catalyst of life-threatening diseases,” Khithika said.
He added that illegal dumping is mushrooming daily as a result of inconsistent waste removal by the ELM.
“Those employed for community outreach should use superior logic by starting campaigns that will educate the community of the health hazards associated with illegal dumping. The Elm should be aggressive in this approach as it has been identified as the number one municipality consisting of illegal dumping sites in the country. The community needs to be made aware of the role it plays as a stakeholder.”
