BOPHELONG. – A 40-year-old suspect was apprehended and beaten by community members for allegedly beating his friend, 37-year-old Dady Shadrack Mofokeng to death. The incident happened on Sunday, 30 July.
According to neighbours living in the same yard as the suspect, the two were friends and the deceased used to visit.
It is said that the deceased came to the suspect’s shack on Saturday night asking for a place to sleep, but the suspect refused and allegedly started beating him with a knobkerrie.
According to neighbours, whose names are known to this publication, the suspect accused the deceased of having previously messed up his blankets when he slept over.
“We heard the suspect beating the deceased at night. He continued beating him and pouring water over him. In the morning, we heard people expressing shock about a person lying on the ground, motionless in our yard.
“When we went outside to inspect, we saw Dady lying on the ground. We are deeply traumatized because we did not expect that someone will be killed.”
Neighbours said they did not intervene because they thought it was just two drunk friends having a misunderstanding.
When Sedibeng Ster arrived on the scene on Sunday morning, the lifeless body of the deceased was lying on the ground in the yard, covered with a blanket.
The suspect had already been taken and placed inside a police van. Community members said what the suspect did to his friend was cruel.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Gertrude Makhale confirms that a murder case docket has been launched for investigation, adding that a suspect has been arrested.
