VEREENIGING. – It was a great advert for grassroots football when FC Belladonna Academy hosted Cancer Awareness Tournament.
This one-day grassroots tournament took place at Leeuhof soccer ground in Vereeniging on Saturday. The Leeuhof community, especially the parents, came in numbers to support their children. Despite the bumpy conditions of the ground, the boys and girls enjoyed each and every moment of action. The day’s program started with the u/11 with boys and girls playing with and against each other.

The tournament was organised by FC Belladonna with the main aim being to raise awareness about Cancer. Some of the teams from the community that came to support this initiative were Dinokeng FC, Unitas Park FC, Sedibeng United FC, and Nashua Vaal FC. Bongani Mnguni who is behind this initiative told Sedibeng Ster that Cancer is slowly growing and affecting more people, young and old, both male and female.
Mnguni said apart from Cancer awareness, these games also encouraged children, especially girl children about the importance of staying active as well.
“There are so many challenges like drugs, teenage pregnancy, prostitution, theft and so we are trying by all means to get our children off the streets and getting them busy,” he said.
Mnguni told Sedibeng Ster Sport that he started this football club with the aim of getting children off the streets and he has managed to achieve his objective. He said the tournament was not necessarily about winning but participation.
